Collection of contemporary painting and printmaking founded by the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz

Art collections are another proof of the Pomeranian Philharmonic’s cultural commitment. In the area of plastic arts, its key highlight is the Tadeusz Brzozowski Collection of Contemporary Polish Painting and Printmaking. Initiated by Mr Andrzej Szwalbe, the founding father and the then-director of the Philharmonic, it was developed between 1986 and 1988 with the financial assistance of the State Fund for Fine Art Orders in Warsaw. Until 1990, the collection was exhibited at a rococo palace in Ostromecko near Bydgoszcz. The exhibition’s curator was Mr Władysław Sekunda. It mainly consists of works purchased from the ateliers, but also ones donated by the artists themselves. Represented are Magdalena Abakanowicz, Zdzisław Beksiński, Jan Berdyszak, Tadeusza Brzozowski, Stefan Gierowski, Władysław Hasior, Jerzy Nowosielski, Jonasz Stern, Józef Szajna, Henryk Stażewski, Jan Tarasin, Jerzy Tchórzewski and many other distinguished contributors to Poland’s contemporary art.

At present, the Pomeranian Philharmonic’s foyer and side hallways exhibit a large collection of sculptures of famous composers and unique custom-made tapestries ordered by director Andrzej Szwalbe. A distinguished place within this collection belongs to a tapestry cycle entitled The Shrovetide Quartet (Kwartet zapustny) by Tadeusz Brzozowski, one of Poland’s most eminent colourists. Some works from the collection of the contemporary Polish painting and printmaking are also exhibited on the same premises.

The set to be exhibited by the District Museum in Bydgoszcz consists of works which are most representative of the nature and artistic importance of the Pomeranian Philharmonic’ collection of contemporary Polish art. At the same time, an emphasis is placed upon the role of an integrating approach to plastic arts and music as inscribed in the profile of this distinguished institution by Andrzej Szwalbe.

A joint venture by the two cultural institutions so important for Bydgoszcz, the exhibition of the Pomeranian Philharmonic’s art collection at the District Museum is intended to make the public aware of how collections of the region’s various cultural institutions may complete each other in an interesting way. The pictures and prints from the Philharmonic’s collection are exhibited at the Modern Art Gallery building. On two storeys of the same building, the Museum presents the finest works from its own contemporary art collection. The present exhibition provides a good opportunity to explore the nature of both these collections, but also an insight into the variety of styles and trends in the contemporary artistic performance. With many painters represented at the same time in both exhibitions, the diversity of artistic strategies of a specific artist may be compared.

The vernissage will take place at the Modern Art Gallery (Galeria Sztuki Nowoczesnej) on Wednesday, 22nd April, at 1:00pm. Admission is free.

The exhibition closes on 7th June 2015.
