Andrzej Bobrowski is a professor at the University of Arts in Poznań, where he runs the Relief Printing Studio and the Institute of Visual Arts of the University of Zielona Góra. He is involved in graphic arts, spatial installations and painting. His changing artistic work, inspired by culture and nature, amazes with constant experiments in relief printing techniques, blending in a current of innovative trends. This diversity of the world of matter, but at the same time cohesion of form and metaphorical message, we want to present at the exhibition “Pilgrimage,” which constitutes a selection of his latest works. The exhibition, in addition to the title “Pilgrimage” – an installation blended in the exhibition space of the room, will feature large format artworks, made in the artist’s own relief printing technique, including The Fields of Love, Gate I-II and The Synagogue in Toledo.
The artists describes his own, well thought-out concept of imaging in the following way: “The world of nature and culture, in which the matrix created by me, its front – this first smooth surface – plane, the existing one with the created one by processing of the first one, cutting deep into its matter, thanks to which the illustration proposed on the first plane becomes legible, is for me a symbol of dualism of practically everything that is important. One of the secrets of relief printing is the fact that everything what’s not needed is cut out of the smooth surface, just like in life. What’s cut out gives the sense to what’s left. What’s left, brings to life the form, illustration, sign, and symbol – creating the history of matrix, but it can also become a premise to create a new reality, namely the history of a reprint. What’s thrown away is outside the current law, but it remains in the system and lives, sometimes very short and also creates its own history.”
Andrzej Bobrowski studied in the Faculty of Painting, Graphic Art and Sculpture of the State Higher Education School of Visual Arts in Poznań. In 1990, he received an honorable diploma from the Prof. Zbigniew Lutomski Woodcut Studio. He presented his artworks at numerous solo exhibitions. Since 1991, he participated in about a hundred group exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including graphic art shows and competitions – International Triennial of Graphic Arts (1991, 2006, 2009, Krakow), International Woodcut Biennial (1992, Bańska Bystrzyca), Triennial of Polish Graphic Arts (2003, 2006, 2009, Katowice), International Triennial of Graphic Arts (2004, Oldenburg), Grafik ohne Grenzen International Print Network (2010, Horst Janssen Museum Oldenburg), and Contemporary Polish Printmaking Exhibition (2012, Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries, New Delhi).
