9th Teofil Ociepka National Painting Competition

Amateur, known also as naïve artistic work, stirs up controversy among estheticians and art critics. Giving to someone who acquired proper education the noble title of artist, it’s hard to justify accomplishments of non-professionals and amateurs. Their works – deprived of academic routine – present the surrounding world in a different way, outside conventions. “Naivety” is their strength. The key to understanding the works made by self-taught painters, according to the organizers of the 9th Teofil Ociepka National Painting Competition and the accompanying exhibition, is honesty and simplicity in perceiving reality. The exhibition presented by the Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz, comprising about 160 works, reviews accomplishments of artists who through their conscious choice or formal barriers, remain outside the official trends in contemporary visual art. The competition, organized by the Regional Culture and Art Center in Bydgoszcz since 1996, confirms the undying popularity and recognition enjoyed by the style known as art brut. (…)
