International Graphic Art Triennial – Kraków 2015 Award for Min Jie Zhang

24.11.2015

On 18 September, the opening of the main exhibition and awards ceremony of the International Graphic Art Triennial – Kraków 2015 took place. The Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz, in cooperation with the MTG Association in Krakow, have since 2009 included in the accompanying Triennial programme the series of graphic exhibitions entitled "Multiplicity in Unity".

This year, on the occasion of the 3rd edition of the exhibition, the Museum sponsored the Leon Wyczółkowski Prize – the patron of our institution. The winner of the first prize was an artist and graphic designer – Professor Zhang Min Jie, whose work Cycle Scene No. 1, made using the lithographic technique, gained the recognition of the committee. The artist comes from China. In 1990, he graduated from the Graphics Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. At present he is a professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, the director of the Association of Graphics of Hebei Province, a member of the board of the Association of Chinese Graphics, and a member of the National Association of Chinese Arts. Initially he dealt with oil painting, designed theatre sets, and even worked as an actor. Above all, he now creates graphic works (woodcuts, lithography) of a symbolic and surreal character, the main motifs of which are often figural scenes – tiny human figures depicted in disturbing, sometimes unreal movement. In a masterly way, the artist combines the classical traditions of Chinese woodcut with bold themes that have political connotations, often referring to European culture. The artist has an extensive list of collective and individual exhibitions to his name that were organised in China, Japan and the US, in institutions such as the China Museum of Art (1995), Nagano Contemporary Museum of Art in Japan (2000) and the Portland Center of the Arts in the USA (2004).
