Stanisław Horno-Popławski, Note

His early works were realistic. However, very soon he developed his own, recognisable style characterised by a strict form and limited detail. For material, he often chose field granite he processed by himself, developed only slightly to maintain the stone’s raw expression. The art of Horno-Popławski, inspired by many variable artistic and cultural phenomena during the long years of his activity, became a peculiar reflection of the 20th-century art of sculpture. In 1966 the artist created a statue of Henryk Sienkiewicz in Bydgoszcz. In 1978 he came to the city to live here, at the invitation of the City Council. He spent four years working in a studio situated in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens in Lublin.
